I'm a lifelong Democrat who was weaned on the civil rights movement. I'm also an activist and union electrician (IBEW) who is lesbian and Chicana.

In 2001, I ran for public office here in Ithaca, New York, and was deeply gratified to win, serving for four years. In 2005, I ran unopposed for re-election.

I've just begun my second term as a Tompkins County Legislator. This website has become an essential tool for communication with community, constituents, my family, and you.

School Board Elections Tuesday:
Kunz, Warshawsky, and Whitehead

Update: Preliminary election results show True, O'Connor and Warshawsky winning seats on the Ithaca City School District Board of Education. Thank you to all who exercised your right to vote.

Our community needs your VOTE!
The Ithaca City School District elections are
Tuesday, May 16 from Noon to 9 PM. For information, call 274-5522. For links to polling places, list of candidates, and Proposition 1 (Budget Vote), click here!

The School Board plays a major role in the quality of education that all ICSD students receive, and the way our community joins together to support the mission of education. I believe that this important relationship is best supported by

Beth Kunz, Carol Warshawsky, and Stel Whitehead.

These candidates build consensus, build community, and share values of inclusion.

--Endorsements of the candidates:

Stel Whitehead knows the issues facing African-American, Latino and low-income students, a perspective that is essential on the School Board. As an experienced educator, Stel will add a needed dimension to Board discussions. She currently works at the Southside Community Center as a Program Coordinator, and serves our community as a Tompkins County Human Rights Commissioner.

Beth Kunz became part of the solution when her child was redistricted into Beverly J. Martin. "As an active parent volunteer, ICSD Key Communicator, a member of the Ithaca Public Education Initiative, and a regular at board of education meetings, Kunz has already demonstrated that she is heavily invested in the success of Ithaca's schools." (Gail Brisson, May 10, 2006, Ithaca Journal Opinion) This Cayuga Heights parent who chose the high road is a great choice for the Board.

Carol Warshawsky supports partnering with community organizations as a way to assist at risk children, and has demonstrated her awareness of root causes of the achievement gap. "Carol's resume includes 16 years of active participation in our school district, from PTA Council president to numerous hiring committees and volunteer roles." (David H. Halpert, May 11th, 2006 Ithaca Journal Opinion) She supports having an Affirmative Action Officer to assist in attaining more diversity in staffing.

--Check out the Village at Ithaca's online responses to 7 questions the Village asked the six candidates.

--Community leader Leonardo Vargas-Mendez recommends Whitehead, Kunz, and Warhawsky: "I urge you to vote on Tuesday May 16 at the Ithaca City School District's Board of Education election for the following candidates, who I believe will best represent the interest of Latino, African American, Asian American, and low income children. The preferred candidates are: Stel Whitehead, Beth Kunz, and Carol Warshawsky."

--Leader and activist Pete Meyers says "I personally intend to vote (for what it's worth) for Stel Whitehead, Beth Kunz, and Carl Warshawsky as 'equity issues' are really the important issue in this election and these candidates seem to best represent a foot forward with this issue."

--Former School Board members support "Equity Advocates" (Gould Colman, Jeff Furman, Ralph Jones, Michael Koplinka-Loehr, Tim Little, Wilma Martin, Ben Nichols, and Steve Shiffrin in joint letter, Ithaca Journal, May 10, 2006, Opinion)

"If you want all students - regardless of race or class - to get a quality education, please vote for Kunz, Warshawsky and Whitehead. They put equity first." (Steve Cariddi, May 11 2006 Ithaca Journal Opinion)

Please vote on Tuesday in the School Board Elections. It's your choice.
